How to Properly Store Crane Parts

When you work in the crane business, you know how important it is to have extra parts ready at a moment's notice. One of the best ways to always be ready for action is to have some well-cared for spares waiting in storage. It's important to note that crane parts are finely tuned and sensitive to the elements. There’s more that goes into storing them properly than the average person may realize. If you want to ensure your crane parts are ready when you need them, follow these essential storage tips.

Ensure they’re packed properly

This is especially important for your larger parts. In these cases, it’s best to use heavy wooden crates or pallets. These can ensure that the parts are stored on a stable surface, while also limiting the impact that ambient vibrations can have on loosening stored industrial parts over time.

Store them in a climate controlled environment

Like any industrial equipment, crane parts are highly sensitive to their environment. Improper storage can lead to rust and other forms of damage that will need to be addressed before you can use the part again. Ideally you should store your parts in a climate controlled space that is free from extreme temperatures, excessive moisture, sunlight, dust or dirt. It’s also a good idea to make sure that you’re storing your parts in a secure environment to protect against theft and vandalism.

Clean and inspect regularly

It’s important to conduct thorough cleaning and maintenance before placing your crane parts into long term storage. Once in storage, it is wise to regularly inspect the parts to ensure that nothing has happened to them while they’re awaiting future use. You may want to routinely lubricate any moving parts even while in storage so you can be sure they’re in good working order once you need them.
